Huayna Potosi is located between the mountains of “Condoriri” and “Chacaltaya”. Huayna Potosi is the most accessible mountain of all mountains of the Cordillera Real, located 45km from La Paz city and with an imposing height of 6,088 meters above sea level. It is known in the Aymara language as “Cerro Joven” (Young Mountain). This mountain is one of the favorite eternal snowy mountains preferred by climbers because of its ascending qualities as well as its snowy characteristics.
During winter, snow and ice fall down to 4,700 m.a.s.l, and at the skirts of the mountain you will find unique colored lagoons, surrounded by fog and rocks from the Tertiary period. Every year expeditions are held daily with the goal to reach the summit or the North Peak, ascending through the east side of the mountain where minimum experience is required in order to climb Huayna Potosi to its fullest. The classic route presents no unusual technical difficulties, with good physical condition along with the combination of acclimatization to the altitude is a great advantage in order to have a better chance of reaching the summit (north peak).
